K+S Executives meet with Premier Wall to discuss Legacy Project

K+S Group Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors Norbert Steiner, and K+S Potash Canada President and CEO Dr. Ulrich Lamp met yesterday afternoon with Premier Brad Wall.

“It was a great opportunity for us to meet and inform the Premier about our Legacy Project”, Steiner says. After the groundbreaking ceremony on June 19, 2012, this was Steiner’s first visit back to Saskatchewan. “We are happy to be here in Saskatchewan and pleased to build a sound working relationship with Premier Wall and the Government of the province.”

The Legacy Project has been making decent progress. In the last year, several milestones have been reached. “With Legacy, we are right on schedule. Among other things, we have built up water supply, finalized disposal wells, and connected the first cavern. In addition to this, we are working on the basic engineering for the project,” Steiner says.

About 130 employees of K+S from several countries are currently working on setting up the site. In 2012, the capital expenditure for the Legacy Project was over 140 million € (about $187 million CAD).

About the Legacy Project

K+S is putting its more than one hundred years of mining experience and world-class expertise to work on the Legacy Project potash mine and production facility near Moose Jaw. It will be the first new greenfield potash mine built in Saskatchewan in nearly forty years. In the first two expansion phases of the new potash site, K+S will invest a total of 3.25 billion Canadian dollars. Production from the mine is targeted for late 2015, ramping to its full capacity of 2.86 million tonnes per year by 2023. With further expansion, production could increase to as much as 4 million tonnes per year. The Legacy Project will offer new job opportunities for Saskatchewan workers, and new business opportunities for Saskatchewan companies supplying goods and services to this important economic development.
