Saskatoon, Saskatchewan – K+S Potash Canada is very happy to report that the first cavern connected on February 11 at the Legacy Project potash mine, located near Bethune, Saskatchewan. Future production caverns will be based on this initial test cavern.
“This is a very significant milestone for K+S Potash Canada and the Legacy Project. It demonstrates that our mine is moving forward as planned, on schedule and on budget,” says Dr. Ulrich Lamp, President & CEO.
“Since operations began, we have been mining two separate caverns, and last week they united underground,” explains Sam Farris, Vice President and General Manager of Operations. “Thanks to our dedicated team at K+S, we’ve reached this important step and we are celebrating this success together.”
Darren Lowe, Cavern Development Operator, describes the moment the caverns connected. “Suddenly on the morning of February 11, the flow targets changed, which raised suspicions that something was happening,” Lowe explains. “We made some adjustments so that all of the flow was going into one borehole. When the second borehole produced flow, we knew with confidence that they were connected.”
At commissioning of the Legacy Project in the summer of 2016, there will be a total of 36 production caverns ready for operation from which potash brine solution will be extracted for further processing in the plant above ground.
