Based at Bethune site, the Environmental Specialist will provide HSSE expertise and support to operations and projects by leading the identification of environmental risks and controls to eliminate or mitigate risks. The employee recommends, develops, facilitates and oversees the implementation of specific procedures and processes to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
The successful candidate will:
•Interface with operations, project, supervisory, corporate, contractor, consultants and visitors to ensure that HSSE standards are adhered to.
•Assist environmental superintendent and participate as a liaison with external agencies.
•Act as part of the responding team as a technical resource in the event of emergencies or equipment failures.
•Assist in the development, implementation and facilitation of the safety, health and environmental integrated management system program
•Develop, review and implement environmental protection plans ensuring company and employee exposure to risks are either eliminated or minimized
•Review plans, procedures and work instructions to ensure compliance with regulations and the Approval to Operate
•Conduct HSSE audits and inspects the application and effectiveness of policies, procedures and standards in the field and coordinates audit recommendations, and assists in the development of corrective action plans in consultation with management
•Lead, participate and review investigations of incidents, and ensures effective investigation, corrective and preventative actions
•Support compliance audits and provides follow-ups for Corrective Actions that have been identified
•Supervise and manage contractors and consultants
•Assist in the development of budgets and schedules
•Prepare scopes of work and provide technical reviews of proposal as well as recommendations for contract award.
•Participate in the evaluation of contractor qualifications
•Review company and contractor policies and procedures to ensure compliance with the Approval to Operate
•Manage the Environmental Monitoring Plan (EMP) to ensure that all aspects meet the requirements of the Approval to Operate
•Manage Adaptive Management Plans and Investigations required for external reporting.
•Provide training to employees and contractors on environmental initiatives, policies and procedures.
•Conduct environmental monitoring and wildlife monitoring as required
•Maintain knowledge of current workplace safety strategies, trends and technologies by developing industry working relationships, and participating in exchange groups, associations and committees
•Direct, coach, train and monitor environment-related performance of staff

Qualifying requirements for this role:
•Minimum 2 year Community College and diploma or relevant degree/certificate in Environmental Engineering Technology
• 3 – 5 years’ experience in water/groundwater and soil sampling and analysis, wildlife monitoring, developing and implementing erosion control plans
•5 – 8 years’ experience in environmental coordination activities preferably in a mining or industrial operation
•8+ years of combined experience with 3+ years focusing on water/groundwater and soil sampling and analysis, wildlife monitoring, developing and implementing erosion control plans and 5+ years in environmental coordination activities (preferably in a mining or industrial operation).
•Experience in project management including developing work scopes for contractors and consultants
•Thorough understanding of applicable environmental regulations
•Working with teams to gain their commitment, confidence and awareness of high level HSE practice and standards
•Must be authorized to legally work in Canada.
•Successful candidates must be eligible to travel outside of Canada as travel may be required
