Health, Safety and Environment Specialist

Your Responsibilities

Provide expertise and support to operations and the project by facilitating the identification of health, safety and environmental risks and controls to eliminate or mitigate these risks. The Health, Safety and Environment Specialist develops, facilitates and oversees the implementation of specific procedures and processes to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations.

This is a temporary full-time (2 year term) position

The successful candidate will:

•Facilitate and support development, implementation and facilitation of the health, safety, security and environmental management system (HSE) program and procedures
•Facilitate and support development, implementation and facilitation of the health, safety, security and environmental training materials and programs
•Act as a proactive change agent to create an ownership based Safety culture
•Interface with operations, project, supervisory, corporate, contractor, consultants and visitors to ensure that HSE standards are adhered to in the Bethune operation
•In the event of emergencies or equipment failures, act as a resource
•Interface with stakeholders to ensure that HSE standards are adhered to both in the legacy project construction and in operations
•Develop, review and implement safe work plans ensuring company and employee exposure to risks are either eliminated or minimized
•Conduct HSE audits and inspect the application and effectiveness of policies, procedures and standards in the field and coordinate audit recommendations, and assist in the development of corrective action plans in consultation with management
•Participate and review investigations of incidents, and ensure effective investigation, corrective and preventative actions
•Conduct audits and support operations in the completion of monthly safety and emergency equipment checks on first aid kits, eyewash and safety showers, fire extinguishers, AED
•Assist/coach Contract Owners with requirements for contractor mobilization and management. Assists and coaches the KSPC Contract Owners to ensure contractor pre-mobilization requirements for specific Scope of Work is being fulfilled prior to them showing up on site
•Coach contract owners on the monitoring of health/safety practices/procedures.
•Conduct spot monitoring on contractor personnel in conjunction with KSPC contract owner rep to ensure that health and safety procedures and practices are being followed
•Maintain knowledge of current workplace safety strategies, trends and technologies by developing industry working relationships, and participating in exchange groups, associations and committees
•Direct, coach, train and monitor health and safety related performance of staff

Qualifying requirements for this role:
•Certificate in Occupational Health & Safety or Construction Safety Officer
•5+ years of applied work experience focusing in Health & Safety Management, preferably in a mining or industrial operations
•Experience in project management including developing work scopes for contractors and consultants
•Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively with all stakeholder groups
•Understanding of applicable environmental regulations
•Understanding of the Mines regulations, OH&S Act/regulations and other applicable codes and standards
•Must be authorized to legally work in Canada
•Successful candidates must be eligible to travel outside of Canada as travel may be required
•Will be required to work staggered shifts including weekends
